Harry Bertoia

Italy (March 10, 1915 - November 6, 1978)

Harry Bertoia was an Italian-born American artist, sound art sculptor, and furniture designer. Early on in his career he designed wedding rings, and designed the one given to Ray Eames. He was invited to move to Pennsylvania in 1950, to work with Hans and Florence Knoll. While there, he designed five wire pieces which became known as the “Bertoia Collection”. Among these designs was the famous diamond chair. Bertoia said of his designs “If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them.”
