Castiglioni was born on February 16th, 1918 in Milan, Italy. Much of his work was in exhibition design, but he also worked on a number of architectural projects, including the reconstruction of the Palazzo della Permanente in 1952 and 1953, which was destroyed by a bombing in 1943.
